OUR MISSION

The mission of Uncharted Shores Academy is to promote a learning environment which will enable students to succeed as productive, contributing members to our society.  We believe that if our students can learn to be Respectful, Responsible, and Resourceful, they will be prepared to succeed as adults and be assets to our society.

To accomplish this mission, USA offers restorative justice, individual accountability, and an educational program which allows students, teachers, and parents to partner together to assist in the development of these desired character traits.

We believe in Exploration!

Explorative Learning is a concept that involves the use of hands-on manipulatives, student inquiry, thematic integrated-subject instruction, learning in multi-aged cooperative groups, and active participation in a project-based authentic assessment learning process.

We believe in Navigating Educational Seas!

Parents and students are encouraged to take an active part in charting their educational journey while teachers guide the navigation. Students learn through their own discoveries as they investigate the world around them.  Students demonstrate their knowledge through presentations and projects while teachers assess their learning through observation and keeping records of student progress.

We believe in following the Charts of Expert Sailors!

The theory that explorative, inquiry-based learning is an effective method of education is borne out by many educational authorities, solid educational research, brain-based studies, and various model schools using the method. Explorative learning embraces many of the practices found in the philosophies of Montessori, Waldorf, Project-Based Learning, Interdisciplinary Learning, and Learning through Play.

We believe in providing appropriate Navigational Tools!

Students are provided with a multitude of resources to be successful, such as an inquiry-based science curriculum, project-based family math lessons, primary source historical documents, and an integrated subject reading program.

We believe in guiding each student into becoming a respectful, responsible, resourceful Crew Member!

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

The standards-based subject matter is taught by the family at home or in family-size, multi-age groups in classes taught by credentialed teachers at school. Students who show by their effort and behavior that they can benefit from onsite classes are invited to participate in cooperative learning groups on campus.  Parents are provided with resources to continue the student’s education at home and in the community.  All lessons incorporate character training as a primary objective, similar to the parenting objectives which families stress at home.

Students enrolled in the Onshore program (full day in classes onsite at school) may complete projects as a cooperative group rather than individually.  This family-style atmosphere, with students taught by the same group of teachers over a period of years, allows instructors to nurture and mentor students in building positive relationships and desirable character traits. Students also serve as role models to peers as they practice leadership roles and teamwork in this cooperative learning environment. Furthermore, families are involved in the education process as a whole, with the parents continuing both academic learning and character education at home and in the community.
